Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s contribution to social reform is undeniable. His struggle against social inequality, discrimination and injustice inspired millions of people all over the world.


He was born in 1891 in a Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh. At that time, caste-based caste system was widespread in India. In his early life, he was a victim of the dirty untouchability, humiliation and prejudice of the society. But instead of succumbing to this injustice of the society, he stood up against this injustice using education as a tool. He believed that education is a weapon that can change the whole world.
He fought all his life to end the dirty caste system from the society.


Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s most significant contribution is his role in drafting the Constitution of India. At the time of independence, India was almost divided socially, religiously and linguistically. He did the difficult task of uniting diverse nations in this great diverse country. He played a major role in the Indian Constitution to ensure justice, equality and freedom for all citizens irrespective of religion, caste and gender.


His great vision was that every person in India should live with equal dignity and freedom. Article 14 (All are equal before the law and shall be protected by the law), Article 15 (Discrimination on grounds of religion, caste, colour, sex or place of birth is prohibited) and Article 17 (Abolition of untouchability) ensure social justice.


He fought for the rights of women. Not only did he fight for women’s education and equality. He worked tirelessly to pass the Hindu Code Bill to protect women’s rights in inheritance.
He was the first person in the world to earn a doctorate in all sciences from the London School of Economics. He is one of the top 100 scholars in the world according to the list of Columbia University.
His economic ideas were groundbreaking. His vision was to create an economic system that would address economic inequality and help the underprivileged. The Reserve Bank of India was formed from his recommendations to the Hilton Young Commission. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s teachings inspired political, legal, social justice and peace movements to stand up against injustice. His famous admonition “Educate, Agitate, Organize” inspired future generations to fight for the betterment of society.
